Hydraulic power units in the mining industry require proper maintenance strategies, including condition monitoring techniques like vibration analysis, to diagnose potential failures such as worn-out couplings and gear pumps.
Hydraulic power units are relatively common in the mining industry, mainly as lubrication systems of other major critical equipment. Therefore, a proper maintenance strategy with condition monitoring techniques addressing its possible failure modes is crucial.
A worn-out coupling and worn-out gear pump are 2 possible failure modes. Here, vibration analysis is the right tool.
This article explains what to look for to diagnose them properly.
Special thanks to my colleague Luis Alexander Bustamante Herrera for providing the pictures for the worn-out gear pump example and my team, Juan Gutiérrez and Drayan Urquia Mendo; it is always a team effort.
