Closed Cycle Pump Bearing Defect

Vibration analysis identified a bearing defect in a Closed Cycle Pump. The Bearing Defect Factor, along with the Envelope Spectrum and time waveform analysis, pinpointed the defect to the inner race bearing, allowing for timely maintenance.

I usually don't share case studies in vibration analysis but this one is a MUST to share and to emphasize on the power of vibration analysis:

- Closed Cycle Pump running by 2000 Kw and 1480 RPM electric motor.
- On page 2 if our defect indications are limited with Overall Vibration Velocity and Acceleration measurements then we might risk to miss up a defect, however, in our Acoem NEST i4.0 we have the Bearing Defect Factor which shows a pre-alarm in the Pump NDE.
- The consistency of the Defect Factor value in Axial, Horizontal and Vertical of the Pump NDE this confirms a defect in the bearing.
- On page 3 we immediately checked the Envelope Spectrum of the Pump NDE and we found harmonic of 122.8 Hz with sidebands of the shaft frequency.
- The time waveform shocks matches with the same frequency and modulated by shaft frequency also we can clearly see how the magnitude is getting higher and lower while the defect getting in and out the load zone. Our finding confirms with the Bearing Defect Factor indication.
- At that time we didn't know the bearing number but from the indications as found above we were certain that the defect is the inner race bearing of pump NDE hence we issued a service order to replace the bearing ASAP.
- From the bearing anatomy we can clearly see the defect in the inner race.

Imagine that you have dozens or maybe hundreds of machines that need to be analyzed, The Bearing Defect Factor helped us to be extremely efficient in our analysis and save valuable time to pin point where to prioritize our attention!.
