**What Are Sidebands?**
Sidebands are frequencies that appear in the frequency domain due to the modulation of a carrier signal by a modulating signal. Imagine gears meshing perfectly with no issues—this would result in vibration activities occurring only at the Gear Mesh Frequency (GMF). However, in reality, imperfections such as worn or damaged teeth or shaft play cause additional frequencies to appear around the GMF. These additional frequencies are known as sidebands.

**Types of Modulation**
Sidebands are typically formed from two types of modulation:
1. **Amplitude Modulation**: This is the most common form in vibration analysis. It results in a new signal with varying amplitude but at a constant frequency.
2. **Frequency Modulation**: This form is less common and results in a new signal with a constant amplitude but varying frequency.
