Peakvue Analysis for Gear Wear Detection

Vibration analysis requires detailed asset information for accurate interpretation. Tools like PeakVue and circular waveforms, beyond traditional spectrum analysis, aid in fault diagnosis, as demonstrated in a recent analysis of low-speed connection gears.

In vibration analysis, information about the assets is critical. Knowing details such as components, elements, operating conditions, manufacturer data, and previous maintenance helps to interpret vibration data accurately. Making it easier to identify potential failure modes, prevent failures and optimize maintenance efficiently.
This week a user requested an analysis on one of its critical assets, which has very low speed connection gears 86 rpm at the input and output of 16 rpm. The proportion of the numbers of teeth helped determine the frequencies of interest and the modes of failure that could occur.
Far from the belief that the global value, the trend and the conventional spectrum are the only tools that a vibration analyst has, today there are many tools that facilitate a fault diagnosis and that very few use due to ignorance or because they live married to spectral analysis.
On this occasion, the PeakVue technology developed by Emerson for the detection of faults that occur at high frequencies and low amplitude, filtering the vibration signals to focus on the impact, showed peaks at 10.06 hz. with a family of harmonics that are related in this case to the gear assembly phase frequency (GAPF), This frequency is present as a result of tooth wear and tooth spacing and the profile has changed.
Another functional tool was the circular waveform, which helps to graphically display and identify complex fault patterns and makes it easier for anyone to understand the fault present in the gear.
These are just examples of the many tools that a vibration analyst has at their disposal that are very useful when determining faults.
