Time signal analysis and frequency spectrum analysis were used to diagnose a localized fault in the crown of a geared pair. The combination of these analyses helped to identify the fault, which was not apparent in the frequency spectrum alone.
In order to demonstrate the importance of time signal analysis in conjunction with frequency spectrum in vibration analysis, I share the case below where we had the opportunity to diagnose a localized fault in the crown of a geared pair. In the frequency spectrum, there is a low amplitude in the gearing frequency, but with many harmonics of the rotation of the crown shaft, as a consequence of the occurrence of impact with each revolution of the shaft. This characteristic can sometimes be confused with mechanical clearance. In the waveform there is a shock pulse present at each turn of the crown. With the autocorrelation of the signal and circular waveform, it was possible to visualize more clearly a fault located in the crown.
