We were recently contacted by a client for vibration analysis and diagnostics on an air screw compressor after they had concerns about a previous report from another supplier.
The initial diagnosis concluded that the screw element was worn and recommended a full overhaul an expensive and time-consuming task. However, once the machine was opened, no wear or damage was found on the screw.!!
That’s when they reached out to us for a second opinion. After performing a detailed vibration analysis, we uncovered the real issue:
The spectrum clearly showed dominant 2X screw mesh frequency with rich sidebands—a classic sign of screw misalignment as shown in Spectrum .
this misalignment was not due to screw wear, but rather foundation flexibility—the machine's structural base lacked the necessary stiffness, leading to misalignment under load and excessive vibration
