Haystack effect, a noisy or interconnected stack in the 600-1600 Hz frequency spectrum of rotary equipment, indicates bad lubrication. Corrupted lubricant causes the haystack to shift left and widen.

Haystack Effect

Sometimes, in frequency spectrum of a rotary equipment, a little hill or stack can be seen in 600 -1600 Hz. This is called haystack effect, which the stack is noisy (full of little peaks) or interconnected and generally is because of bad lubrication, either improper/corrupted lubricant or mal-lubrication of bearing.
Following pictures show corrupted lubricant in a bearing and its frequency spectrum of horizontal direction.

Attention:
By developing corruption, haystack goes to left side of spectrum and gets wider.
