CEPSTRUM ANALYSIS is one of the effective technique (other is envelope analysis) for localized fault (gear, bearing, etc.) detection/diagnosis.

How is it calculated ?
By following operations - power spectrum --> Logarithm --> Inverse Fourier transform.

What does it indicate ?
Number of sidebands, their spacing, their strength, and harmonics.

Why not just analyze spectrum ?
It becomes difficult (and time consuming) when spectra contain multiple/clustered sidebands originating from various sources. It helps in deciphering spectral information.
