Paper Conveyor Roller Excessive Axial Load and Bearing Failure

Excessive axial load on a paper conveyor roller caused bearing failure, leading to high temperatures and lubricant contamination. The bearing was replaced in the field to minimize production downtime.

Bearing failure due to apparent excessive axial load on paper conveyor roller. Degenerative failure with detachment of material only in one raceway on the external and internal runway, going from 22 mm/sec in the morning to 26 mm/sec in the afternoon.
There is a high temperature of 93 C due to metal-to-metal contact between the raceways and rolling elements, strong contamination of the lubricant with metal particles due to the loss of material in the raceways.
It is required to heat the bearing for its extraction fracturing the external track during this task, the integrity of the spigot is not compromised, so it is carried out in the field to change the bearing and not the complete roller, thus avoiding more time lost in production.

The timely diagnosis of failure conditions in this type of components plays an important role when it comes to intervening these failure conditions, ideally in scheduled maintenance time, on the contrary, it directly generates lost time (3.3 hrs in this case) in the productivity of the plant when it is done unscheduled, placing the integrity of the equipment at stake.
