Gear Tooth Failure Detection in a Ball Mill Gearbox Using HD Envelope Analysis
In this case study, our team diagnosed a damaged gear tooth in a MAAG gearbox driving a Ball Mill (Center Drive system) through advanced vibration analysis.Due to the complex gearbox structure and limited sensor placement options, detecting faults at early stages can be challenging. However, by applying HD Envelope analysis, our team successfully identified an abnormal trend in the HD Enveloping (HDrp) parameter, which indicated the development of a gear mesh defect.
Further inspection revealed a broken tooth on one of the planetary gears. The comparison between the healthy and faulty time waveforms clearly shows the modulation and periodic impacts correlated with the Planet Pass frequency.
This case demonstrates the value of high-frequency demodulation techniques in detecting early gear tooth damage — even when access or resonance conditions make diagnosis difficult. Early detection prevented secondary failures and costly downtime.
