A ball mill pinion bearing defect required a 16-hour shutdown extension. Despite pressure from management, the decision to proceed with the changeout was supported by experience and proper setup.
Yesterday I posted a text-book TWF of a ball mill pinion bearing cage and roller defect. Telling the customer that his shutdown had to be extended 16 h to replace the pinion didn’t make them too happy and also made them questioned the severity of the defects. So I suggest we pop the cap up and look, and told them if there are no shavings in this housing, I’ll pack my stuff and go.
An inexperienced analyst could have got overwhelmed by a GM, plant manager and plant engineer and might have surrender to postponing the change out.
In this case it was a no-brainer to stand in there confidentally for a change out.
Experience and proper setup are paramount to success.
