Structural Natural Frequency Problem at a Dewatering Pump

Dewatering pump vibration levels were reduced from 0.9 ips pk to below 0.1 ips pk by stiffening the pedestal, shifting the structural natural frequency from 19.4 Hz to 29 Hz.

Dewatering pump at hydro powerhouse, running speed 1190 RPM (19.8 Hz), vibration levels were close to 0.9 ips pk. Impact test confirmed structural natural frequency close to running speed (19.4 Hz). Modal/FEA indicated stiffening the pedestal would increase stiffness. New pedestal shifts structural natural frequency to about 29 Hz. Overall vibration level dropped to below 0.1 ips pk.
