A 5MW Diesel Generator experienced high axial vibration (52mm/s) due to a 75cm crack beneath cylinder #2 on the main frame. The crack was repaired by rewelding, reducing the vibration to 16mm/s.
5MW Diesel Generator DE High Axial 52mm/s caused by crack on bottom base main frame.
Firstly I make a call to stop the engine and visual inspection on the bearing & coupling hopefully i got some bolt loose or some broken bolt, But nothing is found for some loose either on the bearing generator or on the coupling.
Then I move down to see the damper spring below grating floor. Guess what i got? Surprisingly i found a crack 75cm beneath cylinder #2 Right side main frame.
The thickness of the main frame is about 12mm, I think it occurs heavy stress there resulting fatigue crack.
After Repair rewelding the crack, vibration axial decrease from 52 to 16mm/s.
