High vibration levels (over 11 mm/s RMS) were traced to a cracked spacer coupling, necessitating equipment alignment and coupling inspection.
Today, I want to share some gear coupling misalignment problems in the industry. When I measured the vibration on this equipment, I observed high vibration levels of over 11 mm/s RMS. After analyzing the data, I concluded that the vibration was coming from the coupling. The coupling needs to be checked, and the equipment has to be aligned.
After disassembling the coupling, we encountered something interesting—the spacer coupling was already cracked. This made it clear why the equipment was operating with such high vibration. Below are some spectrum and waveform graphs, as well as an image of the cracked spacer coupling.
