At a factory in Queensland, we recently encountered a significant bearing defect in a fan’s drive-end bearing. This case highlights the critical role of condition monitoring programs and the need for consistent vibration data collection.

For this site, we have been performing remote vibration analysis regularly. However, due to an issue with their data collector, vibration data was not collected for two months. During this short period, the bearing condition deteriorated significantly, leading to severe damage, after the data collector was repaired, we got the new data and once we saw the data we reported the bearing defect and recommended immediate action to replace the bearing to avoid secondary damage.

This incident serves as a reminder of how uneven gap in data collection and analysis can lead to costly failures. By consistently monitoring vibration trends, potential issues can be detected early, enabling timely interventions to prevent extensive damage and unplanned downtime.

The affected bearing has since been replaced, and we performed laser alignment to ensure the machine is properly set up. The equipment will soon be operational, and we’ll re-collect vibration data to compare the new vibration levels with historical trends.

This situation reinforces the importance of investing in reliable condition monitoring systems and maintaining a robust data collection routine. It’s not just about avoiding defects—it’s about safeguarding your equipment, minimizing downtime, and ensuring operational efficiency.
