Saw Machine Bearing Failure

Vibration analysis identified a bearing failure in a saw machine, preventing further damage. The analysis revealed an abnormal increase in vibration levels, leading to the discovery of a fault in the outer raceway of the bearing.

A brief history to show the importance of Predictive Maintenance.
The operators reported to the maintenance team that the saw equipment (Trimmer) of the board classification had an abnormal ruin inside it. The mechanics then made inspections on all components, including the split bearings of the main shaft, which were opened and checked. Not finding any anomaly but with the loud noise still persisting, the specialist in the area asked me to collect vibration in the bearings of the saw shafts and in the drive motors. In the analysis I noticed an abnormal increase in the vibration levels of the second shaft bearing compared to the last collection made, the acceleration was from 3g to 22g at global levels. After checking the envelope spectrum, it was found that the fault was in the outer raceway of the bearing (BPFO). The problem was reported again to the technician, who said that he had not found any changes in the bearing, but as a precaution he would disassemble the entire shaft and remove the two parts of the bearing to better inspect the bearings. After this procedure, it was detected that the bearing failure was actually on the outer track, which was not found by the mechanics because it was in the fixed part of the split bearing pedestal. After changing the bearings, the vibration levels of the bearing returned to normal, according to the collection history.
Vibration analysis is a very important tool within maintenance, as failures can occur in assets that are not detected even in inspections.
