Unit Similarity Comparison Importance

During a routine check of vibrations, a high vibration level of 1X was detected in the burner of the heater in CRYO 1, while the same unit in CRYO 2 showed no vibrations exceeding the limit. Initially, the focus was on a potential process issue related to the air intake flap, which could have increased the force on the suction air for the fan, leading to the 1X vibration.

The unit operates on two cycles, namely the heating cycle and the cooling cycle, with the ability to adjust the air flap opening based on process requirements. Upon comparing the two units operating on the same cycle and load, no significant change in vibration amplitude was observed for both cycles.

This comparison left two possible options to explore: an unbalanced fan or a bent shaft, considering the fan is overhung. To determine whether the issue stemmed from an actual imbalance or a bent shaft, a decision was made to conduct a phase analysis.

The phase analysis revealed a 176-degree difference between the two vertical ends, shedding light on the potential root cause of the vibration anomaly.

Using all possible tool like waveform analysis , spectral analysis with toggle between log and linear graph and phase analysis to identify a potential failure, give you more confidence to decide a real problem and find better solutions.
