The severity of a vibration issue can be greatly informed by the type of measurement we choose to take. Sometimes the extent of a problem is hidden if the right sample settings aren’t chosen ahead of time.

At the same location, the velocity amplitude was 0.147 in/s RMS with a run speed of ~60 Hz—not alarming for this machine. But acceleration told a different story: 2.2 G’s in the 0–2,000 Hz range, and ~3.1 G’s up to 20k Hz (cue the chorus of analysts asking about mounting).

In all cases, the spectra pointed to classic signs of mechanical looseness. The takeaway? How we choose to measure determines how we prioritize.
